Why Blogging Is More Valuable in the AI Era

For years, we have heard that blogging is dying. First, social media was going to kill it. Then video was going to replace it. Now artificial intelligence is supposedly going to make blogging irrelevant.

I believe the exact opposite is happening.

Blogging may be more valuable in the AI era than it was five years ago. The reason has changed. Blogging is no longer just about writing articles to chase Google rankings and search traffic. It is becoming part of a much larger digital publishing strategy built around visibility, authority, ownership, and discoverability.

The internet is moving from a search economy toward an answer economy. Instead of only typing a few words into a search engine and clicking through ten blue links, people increasingly ask AI systems complete questions and expect complete answers.

But those answers still have to come from somewhere.

Someone has to publish the knowledge, experience, research, explanations, opinions, and original ideas that search engines and AI systems can discover, evaluate, reference, and sometimes cite.

That is why I believe the future belongs to publishers.

Blogging Is Not Dying. Its Job Is Changing.

The mistake is thinking about blogging the way we thought about it ten years ago. Blogging used to be discussed primarily as an SEO tactic: identify a keyword, write an article around it, rank in Google, and generate traffic.

That still has value, but blogging has become much bigger than that.

Google says the same fundamental SEO practices that help content appear in traditional search remain relevant to its AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google specifically emphasizes helpful, reliable, people-first content and says its AI search experiences surface supporting web pages as part of answering complex questions.

OpenAI makes the opportunity even clearer. Its publisher guidance says public websites can appear in ChatGPT Search and explains how publishers can allow their content to be discovered, surfaced, cited, and linked.

That means publishing is no longer only about trying to rank.

It is also about becoming a source.

Every Good Blog Post Is a Digital Asset

This is the mindset entrepreneurs, professionals, creators, and businesses need to understand.

A strong blog post is not simply “content.” It is a digital asset.

Unlike many social posts that receive attention for a few hours or days before disappearing into an algorithmic timeline, a well-published article can continue working for years. It can generate search traffic, answer customer questions, establish expertise, attract links, support sales conversations, feed newsletters, inspire videos, provide material for social media, and potentially become a source for AI-generated answers.

You create the intellectual asset once, but it can create value repeatedly.

That is the power of owned digital publishing.

Short Content Gets Attention. Deep Content Builds Knowledge.

We live in the age of the short.

Short videos. Short captions. Short posts. Short attention spans.

And short-form content absolutely has a role in marketing. HubSpot’s 2026 marketing data shows short-form video remains the most widely used content format among marketers.

But something else in that same research deserves attention: blog posts remain among marketers’ top five highest-ROI content formats, and website/blog/SEO remains the number-one ROI-generating marketing channel reported by marketers.

HubSpot’s 2026 marketing statistics

That tells us something important.

Short-form content may capture attention, but deeper content can build understanding, credibility, and authority.

A 30-second video can introduce an idea. A well-developed article can explain the idea, answer related questions, provide evidence, offer examples, address objections, and connect several concepts together.

Word count by itself is not the advantage. Depth is.

And depth becomes increasingly valuable when AI systems are searching the web for useful information with enough context to help answer complicated questions.

AI Can Build the Website. Humans Still Have to Build the Meaning.

Artificial intelligence can now create an impressive website in minutes. It can design pages, generate articles, suggest headlines, write descriptions, and even produce structured data.

That does not eliminate the need to understand digital publishing.

It makes that understanding more important.

Someone still has to determine whether the information is accurate. Someone has to decide what deserves to be published, how the article should be organized, what the title should communicate, which sources deserve links, how pages should connect, and whether AI-generated metadata actually represents the content.

Metadata matters because machines need context. Google explains that page titles provide information about page content, meta descriptions can influence search snippets, and structured data gives search systems explicit clues about what information on a page represents.

AI can generate those elements.

Human judgment gives them purpose.

That is why learning blogging and digital publishing still matters even when AI can build the technology for us. We are not simply learning how to operate a publishing platform. We are learning how to create, organize, package, optimize, and distribute knowledge.

The New Goal Is to Become a Trusted Source

Microsoft provided perhaps one of the clearest signs of where this is heading. In February 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools introduced AI Performance reporting that allows publishers to see how often their webpages are cited in AI-generated answers across Microsoft Copilot, Bing, and other supported AI experiences. Microsoft advises publishers to strengthen depth and expertise, improve structure and clarity, support claims with evidence, and keep content fresh and accurate.

Think about what that means.

We are entering a world where businesses will increasingly measure not only where their website ranks, but where their knowledge gets cited.

That changes the value of blogging.

Publishing Is Also Marketing, Sales, and Reputation Building

Blogging also teaches one of the most important skills any entrepreneur or creative professional can develop: how to communicate value.

You have to earn attention with the headline, create interest with the opening, demonstrate knowledge through the article, build trust through evidence, and move the reader toward action.

That is marketing. That is copywriting. That is sales.

The 2025 Edelman-LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Report reinforces that point. Based on nearly 2,000 professionals, the research found that thought leadership plays an important role in how buyers evaluate companies and can build trust where conventional sales and marketing materials struggle.

In other words, publishing knowledge can influence purchasing decisions before a salesperson ever enters the conversation.

The Future Belongs to Publishers

AI is not eliminating publishing.

AI is increasing the value of having something worth publishing.

There will be millions of people using AI to generate information. But there will also be businesses, professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, and creators whose original knowledge becomes part of the information ecosystem those machines search and reference.

That is the side of the equation I want to be on.

Learn how to write. Learn how to research. Learn how to structure information. Learn metadata. Learn headlines. Learn linking. Learn search. Learn AI discoverability. Learn how to turn one good idea into an owned digital asset that can continue creating value long after you hit Publish.

Because the future will not simply belong to those who know how to use AI.

It will belong to those who give AI—and people—something valuable to find.

That is why blogging is not obsolete.

In the AI era, blogging may be more valuable than ever.
